The Trout fishing off of Virginia has started to make a big comeback since the late 70's and early 80's
when I used to go out with my Grandfather, Uncle, and Father catching 10 to 14 lbs fish easily.
This very day will stand in my mind as the best fishing day I ever had. It was the first week in October,
a calm day about 70 degrees. My fishing buddy Ryan and myself decided to go to the Fourth
Island of the CBBT to wireline for big Grey Trout (Weakfish). I was looking for a 9 pounder
for my final citation to receive my expert angler for the Virginia Saltwater Tournament.
I already had Striper (weight), Striper (release), Tautog, Sea Bass, Red Drum and Black Drum.
I only needed one more species! The reason this is my best and most memorable day of fishing is my
late Uncle Kenny Taylor, one of Virginia's finest salt water anglers was looking out for me.
As we made the run to the Fourth Island I was thinking of him and how we had scattered his
ashes two years prior in the eastern cove of the island, the exact spot we intended to fish that day.
We got our wireline rigs ready to troll and I held mine thinking of how many times my
Uncle had done the same with the same rod and reel
I was using, which he gave to me during his long battle with cancer. As my bucktail hit the
water I let my twelve ounce weight to the bottom of the rocks which cover the fourth island
tube and began trolling. It wasn't even a minute for my first hook up! And the fight began,
he was taking line at first and after a hard fought battle my buddy Ryan was ready with the net to
scoop the the fish out of the water. I felt that I was dreaming knowing he would make the nine
pounds easily. We fished for a while longer and caught plenty of trout over six pounds and headed in.
When we hit the dock I put him on the scale and the grey trout hit 10lb 2oz. I looked to the sky
and to myself thanked my Uncle Kenny.
