Off Shore Wrecks for Sea Bass

Fluketamer and Flukemaster with the results of a nice double hook-up The weather is starting to turn and with the change of season comes some of the best fishing of the year in the Va Beach area. I was really looking forward to this trip and luckily our good buddy, Capt. Joe Wool, had some free time and we were able to get out on his 25' Grady White, the Miss Kellen. Joe has been fishing off shore wrecks for Sea Bass for years and I can tell you that there is nobody better at putting you right over the wrecks. We left the dock around 9:30 am and headed out to the 066 wreck. When we got there it had two boats on it, one fishing, and the other diving. We politely waited for the divers to come up to see if they minded us fishing while they were in the vicinity. They didn't mind at all and told us in fact that there were some Amberjack on the wreck as well as some decent size Sea Bass. We were using medium weight tackle with a standard bottom rig setup. We were using 8 oz. of lead and two Gamakatsu hooks tied 8" - 10" above the weight.

Our founder with one of the best Sea Bass of the day! Once we had the OK we had our lines in the water in about 10 seconds. Captain Joe had a bucket of some of the nastiest cut bait I have ever seen but those Sea Bass couldn't resist it and about half the time we were pulling them up two at a time. The fishing was hot and we were catching a lot of keepers but nothing monstrous so we decided to head further off shore. After talking it over for a few minutes we decided to head out to the Triangle wrecks. We arrived at the Triangle wrecks after about a 30 minute boat ride. We dropped our lines and immediately Jerry and I were both hooked up and pulled in the two Sea Bass in the picture above. We fished there for about 10 minutes and due to heavy boat traffic we decided to head to the Luckenbach wreck. Again as soon as our lines were in the water we were catching fish left and right. Capt. Joe caught a huge Conger eel on the wreck which was released after a small struggle (Soon I will have a picture of the eel posted). We fished the Luckenbach wreck for about 45 minutes and things were starting to slow down so we decided to head back in. It was a great trip. I had never had the opportunity to fish Sea Bass over wrecks before and now I see what all the fuss is about. Already I can't wait for my next trip to Va Beach.
